U.S. DOT/General Motors Settlement Agreement Fire Safety Research Reports

GM agreed to finance or otherwise contract to conduct motor vehicle fire safety research. Specifically, GM agreed to expend for such research at least $5 million within the first two years of the agreement, and at least an additional $5 million within the following three years. The agreement provided that the research would include, among other possible projects:

  • Detailed crash analysis and development of new vehicle crash and component level testing procedures
  • Testing of materials that would reduce the risk of fire
  • Development of techniques for preventing, containing, and extinguishing vehicle fires

This research has been divided into the projects listed below. You may download individual reports by following the links, or you may also download a report index for all project areas.
